Program 100....

Get 100 parents to join the East Antioch Elementary PTA Facebook Group.

OK.... I did my part, and now I need you to do yours. Even not knowing many people at the school I was able to invite four parents to our PTA facebook group today. How many have you sent invitations to? It would be nice to get 100 parents on board with us before the Ice Cream Social. So bring at least two parents on board and then ask them to do the same and in no time we can reach 100 members.

Spread the word. Panther PTA is HERE!

Since I am pretty new to the school, and all of the people I know are already on here, I am challenging everyone to make at least two contacts via email, phone, in person or even by two cans and a string. Most of us all know at least two parents at our school. So contact them today and spread the word so that our school can use this blog and the facebook group to better serve our school community this year. If you are not following our blog, please click on it so you can see yourself as a follower. All the cool kids are doing it, and it lets others know you are in the loop. Thanks for your support.

Welcome Cosentino's Price Chopper

We would like to give a big Panther Pride Thank You to Cosentino's Price Chopper, a Platinum Level Sponsor, for sponsoring our PTA Staff Luncheon. They will also be sponsoring our Watch Dog Program with $200.00 to be used for the Watch Dog Pizza Party and Donuts with Dads.

Corporate Matching

Donations
Corporate Gift Matching:
Making Your Gift Go Further

Many companies have programs through which they will "match" the charitable contributions made by their employees. Through corporate gift matching, an employer can multiply a donation to East Antioch PTA, making the donation and the benefits that our students receive go further.

Check with your company's Human Resources office to see if they offer gift matching. (If they don't, you may want to ask your company to start one.) If your employer does offer this program, your Human Resources department should provide you with a matching gift form to send to East Antioch's PTA Treasurer.

A list of companies that offer Corporate Gift Matching Programs can be found here. Please note: this list does not represent a complete listing of all entities that offer matching gift programs, nor does it necessarily indicate that an entity has continued its matching gift program. Also, some companies place a cap on either their matching program or the amount of matching per employee. Please contact your company's human resources department or matching gift office to verify their matching program.

Recycling

As the school year progresses, East Antioch continues in our efforts to "Go Green" by sending newsletters as email attachments, posting information on the website, and of course, recycling.  Our recycling efforts help raise money for our school while it helps reduce waste in our landfills.  We appreciate all the extra recycling that our families put in the bin, it really helps in our efforts!

Our recycling company, Abitibi Paper Retriever, would like for us to post what types of materials they accept and can use to recycle.

What Goes in the Paper Retriever® Bin
Yes, Please……
Newspaper and Inserts– New newsprint can be made from 100% recycled paper. No virgin fiber has to be added when using this type of process.
Magazines/catalogs– Our Retriever program is happy to take magazines and catalogs, all slick paper. We can use all this high quality/high fiber paper with the exception of any paper coated in wax.
Office/School papers– These types of paper are highly recyclable. Because of the proliferation of paper created by offices and schools, please use the Retriever bin to recycle all that you can. We are able to accept window envelopes, paperback books, workbooks and staples without a problem. Shredded paper is acceptable but please bag the shreds before putting them in the Retriever bin. However, please do not recycle colored paper, wrapping or tissue paper, carbon paper or sticky notes.
Mail– Most direct mail is printed on high quality recyclable paper. Please recycle the mail that you feel  comfortable putting in our recycling bin.
No, Thanks…..
No Cardboard– We do not accept cardboard in any of our Retriever bins. We supply our mills with the recycled fiber we collect through the Retriever program to create new newsprint. Cardboard should not be used in making newsprint due to the excessive bleaching required. However, cardboard is a valuable recycling commodity and should be recycled. Please research cardboard recycling options in your area.
No food boxes, fiberboard or chipboard- Cereal boxes, soda boxes and other paper food containers should be recycled with your cardboard. Please do not put these in the Retriever bin.
No textbooks or hard cover books-We do not have the equipment to modify these types of recyclables in the Retriever system. Please research other options for recycling these items.
No Phone Books– We do not accept phone books in our Retriever bins. We supply our mills with the recycled fiber we collect through the Retriever program to create new newsprint. Phone Books cannot be used in making newsprint. The fibers in the pages of the phone book are in their smallest form and do not contribute to the fiber needed for newsprint. Also, it is very hard to remove the ink from a phone book page. However, phone books are a valuable recycling commodity and should be recycled in the proper capacity. Please research phone book recycling options in your area.

Introducing "Giving P.A.W.S." Program

Parents
Assisting
With
School

We will be starting a new parent involvement program this year called "Giving P.A.W.S." and here is how it works.

By participate in our PTA you will earn a parent paw, your child will be able to turn your paw in with their classroom Panther Paw Program.  A parent paw will be worth five (5) student paws. If you have more than one child at East Antioch you will receive a parent paw for each of your children for your qualified PTA involvement.

Here is how you earn P.A.W.S.--Pay your membership dues, make your $25.00 per child opt out donation (will receive a paw for each $25 payment), have your employer match your contribution (will receive a paw for each $25 increment), attend a PTA meeting, volunteer at least one hour at any PTA event, or by volunteering to be on a PTA committee.

Bonus or additional P.A.W.S. will be awarded for the following-- Bringing a parent to their first PTA meeting (includes your spouse), getting a parent to volunteer for the first time on a PTA committee or event, or by obtaining a corporate sponsor. Watch Dogs will receive a bonus P.A.W.S. each day they volunteer, for a total of two for a full day at school.

PTA Board Members may award P.A.W.S. for other reasons during the course of the school year.

Once earned, you will be giving your parent paw to your child and they will get the honor of placing your P.A.W.S. in their classrooms Panther Paw Bowl and tell how you earned it. This will give your child a chance to be as proud of you as we are of them.

Membership Drive

East Antioch Elementary PTA Membership Drive Goal is 100% Participation.

PTA is a partnership between parents and educators who strive to enhance student learning and enrich the lives of the students within the school. It is also a forum for parents to obtain knowledge and voice their opinions about what is happening in their school.

A common misconception about the PTA is that all they do is organize fundraisers and school events. Fund raising is an important and integral part of the PTA. The funds raised by PTA help support many needed programs within the school. But, you don't have to like or be good at fund raising to participate in the PTA. By being a member of and attending PTA meetings you provide a voice as to how the funds that are raised should be spent within our school.

Why Join PTA?

The number-one reason to join the Parent Teacher Association is to benefit your child. In doing so, you also help your school. But there are many more advantages. Here are just a few:

Get Connected. There’s no better way to know what’s happening in your school.

Discover Great Resources.
The PTA offers a variety of programs designed for parents as well as students.

Tap into a Network. PTA functions provide opportunities to meet other parents and teachers, build rapport and discuss parenting issues that are on your mind.

Watch yourself Grow. By volunteering with your PTA, you gain valuable experiences and personal confidence. It’s an opportunity to put your skills and hobbies to good use for a good cause.

Speak Up. Because PTA is a forum for exchanging ideas, you are encouraged to make suggestions and more effectively suggest change at your child’s school.

Help Your Child Succeed. PTA fosters parent involvement. Parent involvement has been proven by three decades of research to be the greatest predictor of student success.

Witness Improvement. By getting involved at your child’s school you’ll be part of the solution, helping to make positive changes. Local PTAs play an important role in fund raising to provide building improvements, curriculum-based programs, social events – all vital to a school’s success.

Be a Role Model. By becoming a PTA member, you’ll be demonstrating to your child the importance you place on education.

Memberships

$7.00 for a single membership or $10.00 for a family membership.

Opt Out Fund Raising

For $25.00 per child in donations you can disregard all fund raising information that is sent home, knowing you already did your part. We will also do our best to make sure fund raising information does not get sent home.

Corporate Memberships/Sponsorships

We are also starting a Corporate membership/sponsorship this year. So if you could ask your employer if they would like to join our community that would be greatly appreciated. For more information please see out page on Corporate Sponsorship Information.

Happy Birthday America

July 4, 2010 is the 234th Birthday of our great nation and regardless of your political point of view the Declaration of Independence is important to us all. It is the frame work of our government and the Constitution of the United States. So if you are looking to do something different with the family this year, then take a few moments and read the Declaration of Independence and maybe even the Constitution with your kids. I am sure most of you have not taken the time to do this for a very long time. So turn this July 4th into a learning experience for your family. Who knows, maybe you will start a new family tradition. If you want a real treat visit the Library of Congress and see the rough draft of the Declaration for your self.

How Can I Help Corner

We have added a new page to our blog. The "How Can I Help Corner" will be a place to inform our PTA community of ways that all of us can improve our children's educational experience here at East Antioch Elementary. Please check out the first installment on "Why Should I Join the PTA"
